03.00 THE PRESENT SIITUATION IN THE PROJECT AREA

03.05  Lighting and study.

Kerosene lamps are mostly used for lighting especially in rural areas. Kerosene and electricity are used in urban areas. An average of 10 litres per month is used per household . Some rural schools consume about 120 litres per month. The fuel is bought from filling stations in towns. A litre of kerosene costs €.0,35. The average cost is therefore at least € 3,50 per household per month. Lighting is used for studying, and household lighting.

Some library facilities are available. Some schools have evening classes, which is why they run up costs up to €42 per month.. Evening classes are a compulsory requirement in the preparation for  examinations.

Burning kerosene in confined spaces on a regular basis constitutes a major health hazard, especially for children.

The project includes the supply of photovoltaic lighting for study purposes and for schools where evening classes are held. It does not cover domestic lighting in individual homes, unless the lighting is required for purposes of productivity increase. In that case, interest-free micro-credit loans will be made available to interested parties.

Families interested in photovoltaic home power systems and who are able to make regular contributions for them in addition to their regular monthly contributions into the Cooperative Development Fund can form self-terminating buying cooperatives at tank commission or well commission level.
