How to replace the motor brushes
Tools required : Fine pliers, small screwdriver, small electricians spanner.
Wear and tear on the motor brushes is such that after a number of years (indicatively 5-7 years) they will need to be replaced. It may also be good practice to replace the brush springs on such occasion. The need for a brush change is indicated by simple stoppage of the pump caused by the spring mechanisms which reach an end stop blocking pressure on the brushes so that current no longer passes to the motor. Unnecessary repeated opening of a pump to check brush wear can be harmful in that it introduces more air and therefore oxygen into the motor chamber thereby aggravating the possibility of corrosion of certain parts. Where pumps have been installed in the framework of a rural water supply project, they should be pulled at 5-6 year intervals and the brushes changed irrespective of their condition.
Step One
Lift the arms of the spring clips on the two black motor brush holders (344) on the bottom end of the motor and remove and examine the brushes (344).
Note : The Solar Spring brushes have an expected life span of between 3 and 5 years'continuous use, and are protected at their external end in such manner as to avoid sparking in case of total wear.
The actual length of the brushes when new is approx 15mm.
The usable length of the brushes is : 12mm
Each millimeter of usable length represents indicatively a life of 400 hours actual use, usually more.
If the remaining brush length is 6mm or less, the brushes should be replaced.
If the brushes are not replaced, it is wise to register remaining brush length for future use.
Step two
Check fast-on terminals and spades (359), earth nut (360) and earth spade (360). They need to be removed only when the motor itself (343) or the motor shroud (358) or the electric cable (363) has/have to be replaced.
