Sect. 2 : Contents.(06 hours)

Contents part 1 : information needed. (At least 2 hours)

General information on the physical features of each project area, the local economy, and the life of the inhabitants is needed for the preparation of a first version of the project documentation for integrated development project. This is normally the task of the local party, usually the (future) project coordinator. No detailed research is needed. The required information should be known to anyone with a good knowledge of the project area. Detailed statistics are not needed, The information should, however, present an accurate picture of the quality of life of the people  the project areas.

Usually, a matrix (template) of the project index  (the Model)  used for integrated development projects will have been prepared. This greatly helps lighten the tasks of those whose job it is to complete the project documentation.

Obviously some information is exclusive to each project area. This information can be supplied by replying to a list of questions. This is a very simple covering the (mostly local) information considered necessary to all projects.

Replies to the questionnaire are used to draft (or complete, or adapt) the texts of the various files in the project index..

Obviously, it is always possible to open the files in the project index and fill them in directly without using the questionnaire !

Specific information will be analysed in detail section by section and file by file under Section D : The student’s project.  The following form a general guideline.

Of  the files in section 1 : General Information the most important files are:

01.04 Maps of the project area and 01.08 Information on the NGO being the Cooperative that will take responsibility for project execution.

The maps are essential to the comprehension of the project. They will show urbanised areas, water courses, roads and physical barriers. Without this knowledge it is impossible to work out the planned system of social, financial, productive, and service structures. Information on the population distribution in the project zone and on existing services such as schools, clinics, wells, boreholes, pumping systems, electricity network (if any) is vital to efficient and accurate of the project documentation.

Local and military maps may not be available in some areas. In that case, the maps may need to be hand drafted, or drawn schematically. In that case the maps do not have to be «exact ». They must, however, respect a clearly given scale, as distances between one settlement and another are extremely important.

Of the files in section 2 : Economic and geophysical information :

National and regional information should be minimal. Information on the project area itself should, on the other hand, be as complete as possible. The most important file by far is 02.04 The list of the villages in the project area. This file enables the compiler of the project documentation to analyse and give indications for the placement of the +/- 200 water tanks and the +/- 40 wells/boreholes. This analysis in fact provides a vision over all of the planned project structures. (For complete information refer to the anthropological analysis of the three project levels in the third block solutions to the problems of the course).

Of the files in section 3 : Information on the actual  conditions in the project area :

The most important file is 03.11 Habitat and home where a detailed description of the specific situation of women is required. How do they pass their day ?

Perhaps the most difficult question in the questionnaire is question 4.0 on the identification os gypsum (CaSO4 + H2O)  or anhydrite (CaSO4+1/2H2O) deposits. Where possible, each rural project should be designed to include at least one gypsum deposit or existing quarry within its territory. I is the most common mineral on the earth’s surface.  However, detailed information is unavailable due to lack of research. In that case, searches will be carried out during the second phase of the project.

1. Research.

Complete the questionnaire for your chosen area..
