01. In depth - the bases of a
good quality of life.
“Beyond
our varied races, religions, nationalities, and languages, we humans share a
collective dream of a world of healthy, happy children, families, communities,
and natural environments joined in peace and cooperation. These are all forms
of real wealth that are not available for purchase or sale and have no monetary
equivalent. These are our primary sources of true happiness.” Korten D, The World of Our Dreams,
YES !
Magazine, April 18, 2011.
Look at slide :
11. The bases of a good quality
of life.
Physical security.
Suppose
your zone had a population of 50.000 inhabitants.
1. Opinion.
On one page, make a list of the physical
safety aspects the population itself can provide its members with. Which
instruments does the community need to have to be able to carry out these
tasks ?
What is the role, in your view, of social control on the activities of
individual community members ?
2. Opinion.
On one page, make a list of the physical
safety aspects that the population itself cannot provide its members. Why can’t
the population provide this physical safety ?
The task of
integrated development projects.
Take
another look at the list of 7 factors on slide 11. The bases of a good quality
of life.
Some
of the factors mentioned are usually considered the responsibility of the
State.
3. Opinion.
On one page, briefly analyse factor by
factor the aspects you would normally consider the responsibility of the
individual and the local community, and those you would normally consider to be
the responsibility of the State.
4. Opinion.
On one page, indicate (where applicable)
why some aspects which are normally the responsibility of the State have been
included amongst the tasks of an integrated development project. Which
conditions precedent have to be met in your project area for the aspects in question
to be handled directly by the populations themselves within the framework of an
integrated development project ? (Don’t forget to consider the
exploitation of all forms of local resources).
Your
opinions should include at least 7 (very
short) paragraphs.
During
the course you may wish to revise your opinion as the nature of the structures
foreseen under the Model gradually become more evident to you.
