We continue with our analysis of the sixth service considered necessary for a good quality of life.

Poverty is by no means limited to developing countries.

In 2011, 32% of working families in the United States were “low-income”, defined as 200% of the “poverty threshold”,  while 11% of working families were below the poverty line, defined as US$ 22.811 for a family of 4 with 2 children. 70% of low-income families and 50% of poor families were working, many of them with both parents working, but simply did not earn enough money to cover basic living expenses. (Roberts, B. et al, Low-Income Working Families : The Growing Economic Gap, The Working Poor Families Project, Policy Brief, Winter 2012-2013, www.workingfamilies.org. January 2013.) For an analysis of the situation in the United Kingdom, see Aldridge. H. et al, Monitoring Poverty and Social Exclusion 2012, Joseph Rowntree Foundation avec New Policy Institute, York, November 2012.  ISBN 9781859359549.)

Look at slide :

22.  Work for all.

The goal of local integrated development projects under the Model is to create a cooperative, interest-free, inflation-free local economic environment in each project area where individual initiative and true competition are free to flourish.

Occupations shown in the slide are only indicative of work opportunities generated automatically in the course of execution of each individual project. Others have been mentioned in various sections of the course. For example in Section 2 of Block 1 : 07. Food security  on plant nurseries, work opportunities for blind and handicapped people were mentioned. «Labour »  is needed for the construction of primary schools (often up to +/- 200 in the framework of each project) and secondary schools; hundreds of university students and graduates who are currently unemployed in larger towns can return to each project area to act as teachers in the schools to be built there. Think of the possibility of setting up +/- 200 small sports centres ; a local football championship ; cultural activity groups......

1. Research.

Write a one-page report on current unemployment in your project area.

2. Opinion.

Have the courage to dream ! Describe on two pages how you think the execution of an integrated development project in your area could eliminate unemployment there and ensure productive activities for everyone.
